Office Furniture Rendering: the Massoni Case Study

How It All Started

Before I founded LightVision, I worked at Massoni for six years as an employee, and not just on renders. I made animations, catalogues, dimension icons and price lists, and I also designed new furniture collections from scratch: from the first idea, through working out the technical possibilities and fitting a specific price point, to drawings, renders and prototypes.

I often worked directly on the production floor and on installations at clients’ premises too. That gave me knowledge you can’t get just sitting at a computer. I know how a piece of furniture is actually built, where the technological limits are, and what can be manufactured versus what will only ever exist in a render.

When I left, I said openly that I was setting up my own studio. We parted on good terms and the work simply carried on in a different form. It continues today, fifteen years later.

Scope of Work

Over the years we have produced thousands of images for Massoni, covering almost every type of marketing material.

  • Studio renders of single pieces and complete sets, ready for the catalogue and online shop.
  • Office interior renders showing the furniture in a realistic space.
  • 3D animations presenting how the furniture works and whole collections in motion.
  • Product catalogues, from graphic design to print-ready files.
  • Dimension icons: clean vector drawings showing the size of each piece on the product page.
  • The work has covered over a dozen collections, including Desire, Modern, Endemic, Eco, Creator, Fundamental and the Coorpo chair range.

A Project That Went All the Way From Idea to Installation

One of the most interesting moments of this partnership was furnishing a large industrial plant.

I started by designing furniture to that client’s specific requirements. Then came the renders, used to present the concept at meetings with the plant’s decision-makers. Once the design was approved, I worked on producing the furniture, and finally helped install it on site at the plant.

Going through that whole chain, from the first sketch to assembling the furniture in the room where it will stand, changes how you approach renders afterwards. You know what is realistic, what will go wrong in production and what the people on the other side of the table will notice during a presentation.

Why Knowing Production Matters When Rendering Furniture

Rendering office furniture looks simple at first glance: a simple form, a few materials, good light. The difference lies in details you only see once you know how the furniture is made.

The thickness of a desktop and how its edges are banded. How upholstery really sits on office chairs with a particular type of seam. Where a drawer runner ends. How gloss behaves depending on the material.

A furniture manufacturer notices these things immediately, even if they can’t always name them. A render either looks like their product or like something similar.

How We Work Together Today

After fifteen years the library of material is largely in place. The collection models exist, the room sets are ready and the catalogues have a set structure.

Today we work together whenever something new comes up: a new collection, a new colour variant, new material for a campaign. A short message is enough, because after so many years there is no need to explain the context, the standard or the expectations.

That is probably the best thing you can say about working with a client: after fifteen years it still works, and there is still no reason to change anything.
